I’m really thrilled to announce Kevin Dietsch has joined The Observatory to photograph weddings! Kevin graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photojournalism from the Corcoran College of Art and Design and is now a full-time staff photographer with United Press International. He has developed a unique eye and quick reaction time covering major national and international events. This makes him a perfect fit for capturing the peak emotions and unexpected moments that occur throughout a wedding. In the past year alone, he has photographed President Obama’s inauguration, the Super Bowl, and the late Senator Kennedy’s funeral. Most recently he covered the devastating earthquake in Haiti while embedded with the US military as they provided medical aid to Haitians. Next he flies out to Vancouver BC to cover the Olympics for the entire month of February. As a fan of both the Olympics and the Pacific Northwest, I admit I’m particularly jealous of that assignment!
In his free time, he and his wife Ioana enjoy the outdoors and participate in a number of recreational sport leagues, including two-hand-touch football. He has also recently taken up what I would describe as “extreme” trail running, which involves meeting up with a group of runners in the late night or early morning hours to run through Rock Creek Park with nothing but the aid of a headlamp to light their way!
You can see his wedding portfolio on our website. Welcome to the team, Kevin!
It was fun to see one of our images accompany a story in the current issue of The Knot about the best Washington DC area museums to hold a wedding. The image, taken by Barbara Salisbury, is from Michelle and Joel’s wedding at the The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. Whether outdoors in the Wilson Plaza or inside the grand Atrium or the more intimate Rotunda or Pavilion rooms, the Reagan Building is always a venue we enjoy photographing. Great architectural lines! You can see more images from Michelle and Joel’s wedding in a slideshow on our website.

One of our brides — Eileen, who was married this past June at Rust Manor, is featured in the current issue of The Knot’s Style Stalker article. In the column, she describes her mermaid style wedding dress as well as the couple’s cultural backgrounds that contributed to the look and feel of their wedding. I’ve included a few more images to show the truly stunning details of their wedding day.

The groom’s mother handmade each paper flower that was glued onto each escort card.

They provided a “flip flop valet” for guests to slip out of their formal dress shoes and into something a bit more comfortable.

Eco-Beautiful Weddings is an online magazine about eco-friendly weddings. The pages are full of green wedding ideas, environmentally friendly products –some of which I sent out as Christmas gifts this year, and a quick mention of Zipcar –my favorite source for wheels!
We contributed a lot of the photographs for the premier issue –including the cover! We look forward to celebrating the formal launch of the magazine in NYC later this month and contributing to the next issue.

More good news! Not only are we listed in Washingtonian Bride & Groom as one of Washington DC’s best wedding photographers, but Anita and Dan’s August wedding at the Inn at Little Washington is also featured in the issue that goes on newsstands this week!
Anita and Dan became friends while attending the London School of Economics. Their careers took them to separate continents. While one was in North America the other would be in Europe and vice versa. They were like ships –or actually airplanes, passing in the night. Eventually they met up again on the same side of the Atlantic as guests at a wedding in Virginia. A few years later they would celebrate their own marriage in an intimate wedding at The Inn at Little Washington.
For those who have not enjoyed the pleasure of The Inn, it’s an internationally recognized restaurant and hotel housed in a village of colonial-era buildings in the quaint town of Washington, VA just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In short, The Inn is essentially cozy, rural, small town meets five star restaurant and hotel. The staff of The Inn are kind and show humor and hospitality to everyone –including the photographer. I felt somewhat pampered as they offered me food and beverage as if I were one of their guests.
Anita and Dan’s wedding was one of those days I did not want to end –visually stunning, filled with emotion, and energy that lasted through the end of the night.

The day started off quiet in the Claiborne House where Jasmine Ibrahim styled Anita’s hair and applied her makeup. “Applied her makeup” does not capture the artistry involved in Jasmine’s craft. Look at Anita’s eyes, and not my words, to get the full impact of Jasmine’s talent.

Anita and Dan saw each other for the first time in the comfort of some shade just outside the Claiborne House. It was a rather toasty August day, so we sought shade when possible. I love watching couples present themselves to each other and the accessories they’ve selected to wear on this memorable day. What seem like accessories on a regular day become heirlooms for future generations after worn at a wedding.

A ladybug landed on Dan’s shirt. We took it as a sign of good luck.

The ceremony took place in front of the Gamekeeper’s Cottage and was followed by cocktail hour and a reception in the Ballroom. Fine food –ok, extraordinary food, laughter and dancing were plentiful!

We’re thrilled and honored to once again be listed amongst the best wedding photographers in Washington DC by Washingtonian Bride & Groom. This is our seventh consecutive year on the Washingtonian’s “best of” list for wedding vendors and the news that we’re on the list makes our toes tingle each time!
